Introduction to College
Gandhi Mahavidyalaya, Orai, is a prominent institution of higher education located less than half a kilometer from Orai Railway Station and approximately two kilometers from the Orai Roadways Bus Stand. Conveniently situated on Station Road in the Orai district, the college benefits from excellent connectivity by both rail and road networks. Orai city lies almost equidistant from Jhansi (114 km) and Kanpur (106 km), and is traversed by National Highway 27 (NH–27), a part of India’s East–West Corridor, which further enhances its accessibility.
The college was established in the year 1969 by the late Pt. Chaturbhuj Sharma(Former Education Minister of Uttar Pradesh), a revered social reformer popularly known as the Bapu of Bundelkhand. The institution’s foundation was laid under the guidance of the then Education Minister of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Since its inception, Gandhi College has played a pioneering role in expanding the reach of higher education in the socially and economically disadvantaged Bundelkhand region. Over the decades, the institution has remained steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence, inclusivity, and community development, despite facing several challenges.
The college has grown significantly under the visionary leadership of the Late Pt. Manikchandra Sharma, who served as the Life Chairman of the College Management Committee, has continued to flourish under the current Chairperson, Dr. Anil Kumar Paliwal. Their dedication and foresight have been instrumental in shaping the college’s identity as a beacon of knowledge and empowerment in the region.
Gandhi Mahavidyalaya offers a broad spectrum of academic programs, including undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program provides instruction in eleven disciplines: Hindi, Sanskrit, English, Geography, Pedagogy, Psychology, Defence and Strategies, Economics, Sociology, History, and Political Science. At the postgraduate level, the college offers Master of Arts (M.A.) programs in six subjects: Hindi, Sanskrit, Defence Studies, Geography, Education, and Psychology. Among these, all subjects except Hindi are offered under a self-financing scheme. Additionally, the college offers a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program, aimed at preparing competent and compassionate Educators.
The academic workforce comprises 35 faculty members, including 24 permanent and 11 self-financed teachers. Supporting the academic operations are 9 Class III employees and 8 Class IV staff members. Together, they contribute to the smooth functioning of the institution and the holistic development of the student body.
The institution occupies a special in the Bundelkhand region and is well known for its unique identity ,as the college breeds on moral footing, democratic functionary ,non-commercial approach, social commitments, excellent faculty, rich library, good research base and social orientation. The institution aims at imparting quality education to meet new challenges at national and international level.
